The WASZP is the world's most popular one-design foiling class, now represented by over 1200 sailors across 40 countries. It is the most accessible foiling class out there, providing a safe, high-performance sailing experience without breaking the bank. The boat is sailed by a broad range of sailor, including club sailors and Olympians; men and women; 12 year-olds, 70 year-olds and anything in between. There is a place for everybody in the WASZP fleet and that diversity and inclusivity shines through at every WASZP event.
Joining the swarm is not just about buying a boat. It is about becoming part of a community and living the WASZP lifestyle. It's all about getting together with like-minded people of all ages and abilities and having a blast on the water, whether that's racing or just ripping around on the foils for the simple thrill of it. Even on the land, the WASZP class keeps the good times rolling. Top sailors share their tips and knowledge with the rest of the fleet and everybody gets together to enjoy knock-out socials and barside banter.
For those looking to feed their competitive spirits, WASZP racing is an awesome experience. The top of the fleet is at a world-class standard and the youth program feeds into SailGP and offers some incredible career opportunities. As you move down the fleet, the battles continue across the age divisions, including in the competitive masters fleet. Although the front of the fleet is at an incredibly high level, WASZP events always cater for all abilities.
Canda is one of the newer sailing nations to enter the world of WASZP sailing. There are events planned including Canadian Championships. The newly founded Canadian WASZP Association spans the entire country and has representation in the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario and BC. There are also training programs in Kingston that provide plenty of opportunity for Canadian sailors to hone their skills and master the boat.
The Canadian WASZP class has representation across the entire age range. The junior (U20) and youth (20-25) divisions are naturally enthusiastic and hotly contested. The WASZP_X will only increase the boat's popularity for youngsters, who now have a genuine foiling pathway from 11 or 12 years old right up to SailGP. The apprentice group (26-39) come from a range of previous classes and backgrounds and includes club sailors and former national squad sailors. The masters (40-49) and super-masters (50+) sectors of the fleet are becoming increasingly popular and competitive, both on the water and in the bar.
The fleet has some of the best female representation for a mixed singlehanded class and the class is actively taking steps to increase the number of women on the circuit. Hattie Rogers became the first woman to win a WASZP GP event in 2021 and with many more talented women joining the swarm, the challenge for the top spots has never been more balanced. In the recent Sail GP event in San Francisco there were many women on board the boats playing key roles.
